I absolutely agree that lowering our expectations of what we can accomplish should not mean lowering our expectations of what we should do. All of us can and should take action on a daily basis to reduce the burdens of poverty around the world. 

Where we need to change our expectations is about the short term impact of the actions that we do take. We shouldn&#039;t expect that because we switched to Fair Trade Coffee that thousands of villagers have escaped poverty--nor should we reject switching to Fair Trade Coffee because it doesn&#039;t immediately end poverty for those same villagers. 

The point of being a patient optimist is to take action now--believing that we can change the world--while being patient for the effects of those actions to manifest themselves.</description>
